There’s something extra magical about wintertime when you’re surrounded by little ones, laughter, and the sweet smell of chocolate in the air! This year, I wanted to bring some cozy cheer into our daycare and decided to set up a Hot Cocoa Bar just for the kids—and it turned out to be a big hit!
The entire setup was purchased from Amazon, and it came together so easily that I just had to share. With a few fun mugs, festive signs, treats, and lots of whipped cream, we transformed a little play area into a wintery wonderland.

Daycare Friendly Hot Cocoa Bar Checklist:
Every element was kid-friendly, durable, and affordable—no breakable glass or anything too messy.
1. Cocoa Station Table
Kid-height small sturdy table or cart
Tablecloth or themed runner (winter, holiday, etc.).
2. Hot Cocoa
Warm cocoa in an insulated dispenser
Non-dairy options (oat, almond, or soy milk) for allergies. Dairy for non allergies.
3. Safe Serving Cups
Kid-safe cups with lids (paper or reusable plastic)
Stirring spoons or stir sticks.
4. Sweet Toppings
Mini marshmallows
Whipped cream (optional)
Mini chocolate chips
Sprinkles (holiday or colorful)

5. Flavor Add-Ins
Peppermint sticks or crushed candy canes
Cinnamon sprinkle shaker
Vanilla syrup (optional)
6. Allergy-Friendly Labels
Clearly label all toppings
Avoid nuts unless pre-approved by all parents
7. Napkins & Wipes
Paper napkins
Baby wipes for sticky hands
8. Kid-Friendly Decor
Winter signs (“Warm Up Here!” or “Cocoa Corner”)
Snowflake cutouts or banners

Tips for Hosting a Toddler-Friendly Hot Cocoa Bar
1. Keep It Low and Accessible
Set everything up on a child-sized table or play kitchen so toddlers and preschoolers can reach everything themselves. Independence = confidence!
2. Pre-Pour the Hot Cocoa
Instead of letting the kids pour hot liquids, have small, warm (not hot!) mugs of cocoa already filled. I used a low-sugar mix and added warm milk for a creamy finish. You can also go dairy-free with almond or oat milk if needed.
3. Offer Topping Choices in Lids or Shakers
Tiny hands + open jars = disaster. Pour toppings into plastic containers with lids or use shakers for sprinkles. This gives them a choice but keeps the mess manageable.
4. Serve with Snacks
Simple finger snacks like shortbread cookies, graham crackers, or muffins make it more festive and help soak up the cocoa. You can even have the kids help make them earlier in the day!

5. Decorate with Intention
Little touches like snowflakes on the wall, matching trays, and a banner make it feel like a real event. Keep everything soft, cheerful, and safe for little hands.
6. Make It a Learning Experience
Use the opportunity to teach about textures, counting marshmallows, or sharing. Ask them how the cocoa smells, tastes, and feels—turn it into a sensory moment!
7. Snap Some Photos!
Parents love seeing their children enjoy special moments, so don’t forget to take pictures. The setup looks great in photos and makes a sweet memory to share.

Bonus: Make a small take-home cocoa packets for parents/kids
Setting up this hot cocoa bar was honestly one of the most joyful things I’ve done with the kids this season. It was simple, inexpensive, and so special for them. They loved the independence of choosing their own toppings, the warmth of the cocoa, and of course—the treats! If you’re looking for a cozy winter activity for your daycare, classroom, or even a playdate at home, I highly recommend giving a hot cocoa bar a try.
